About Tyres

There are lots of tyres to choose from including tyres suited to warm or cold conditions, wet or dry road surfaces or particular loads.

The radius and width of the tyre will vary from car to car, as will the profile (the radius from the inside to outside edge of the tyre). All tyres are marked with a set of numbers to describe these characteristics which we use to work out which replacement tyres are right for you.

The markings on the tyres are best explained as follows:

205 55 R17

205 – This figures expresses the width of the tyre in millimeters. So this tyre is 20.5cm wide.

55 – This figure gives us the profile of the tyre, also called the sidewall height. It is expressed as a percentage of the width, so in this case, 55% of 205 which is 113mm.

R17 – This is actually two pieces of information. The R means that this is a radial (or more properly, a radial-ply) tyre . The number gives us the size of the wheel rim that the tyre is designed to fit, in inches.

Sometimes there is additional information to do with the speed rating of the tyre or load capacity. We can give you advice about this once we have information from you about your driving style and load.
